Handheld reality capture with the Lixel K2.

Walk a space once, leave with a measurable record of it — point cloud, mesh, and 3DGS from a single handheld capture.

Volumet is primarily an equipment rental and access provider. This page describes a supported workflow and rental support option — not a certified survey, professional BIM modelling, or consultancy service.

Reality capture, without the tripod.

Handheld reality capture means recording the as-is state of a physical space by walking through it with a SLAM LiDAR scanner. The XGRIDS Lixel K2 maps its own trajectory while capturing 200,000 points per second with real-time colourisation — so a floor that would take a morning of tripod setups becomes a twenty-minute walk.

The result is a dataset you can measure, model against, and share: a point cloud for technical work, a mesh for review, and optionally a photorealistic 3D Gaussian Splatting scene for communication — all from the same capture, depending on processing workflow.

Rental workflow

From enquiry to dataset.

1
Enquire
Send dates, site type, and intended output. Availability and terms confirmed within one business day.
2
Onboard
Optional Zoom session: setup, capture technique, file handling, return requirements.
3
Capture
Walk the site with steady technique and loop closures. Real-time preview confirms coverage.
4
Process & return
Process in LixelStudio or hand to your pipeline. Return the kit; every dataset stays with you.
Limitations

What this is — and is not.

This is equipment rental with workflow support. Capture quality depends on site conditions, scanning technique, and processing. Volumet does not provide certified survey deliverables or operate the scanner for you unless a partner-supported arrangement is agreed in writing.

Handheld reality capture, answered.

What is handheld reality capture?
Recording the as-built state of a space by walking through it with a SLAM LiDAR scanner — producing a measurable point cloud, and optionally mesh and 3DGS outputs, without tripod setups.
How long does it take to capture a site?
Walkthrough capture typically covers a floor in minutes rather than hours. Total time depends on site size, complexity, and the coverage planning done beforehand.
Do I need experience to do this myself?
Steady walking technique and loop-closure habits are learnable in a single onboarding session. Dry rental without onboarding is subject to approval based on experience.
What file formats do I get?
Depending on processing workflow: LAS, LAZ, E57, PLY point clouds, mesh outputs, RCP for Revit/AutoCAD reference, and 3DGS scene formats via XGRIDS workflows.
