How to get a good scan, what the app needs, and what to do when something goes wrong. Still stuck? Email us or message us on WhatsApp.

What you need

  • An iPhone or iPad with a LiDAR sensor: iPhone 12 Pro or any later Pro model, or an iPad Pro from 2020 onwards.
  • iOS 17 or later.
  • About 500 MB of free storage to start a scan, more for a whole home.
  • A Wi-Fi connection for the upload, ideally.

On an iPhone without LiDAR the app opens, but it cannot scan. There is no Android version; results open in any browser.

How to scan a home

  1. Get the room ready. Turn on the lights and open the curtains. Take down or turn over family photos and documents, and ask people and pets to leave the room.
  2. Sign in and create a home. Use your email address. Name each room as you start it.
  3. Scan one room at a time. Hold the phone upright at chest height and walk slowly along the walls, then through the middle. Point it at the floor, the ceiling and under tables too.
  4. Watch the colour. The mesh is red where the app still needs photos and turns green as it takes them. You do not press a shutter: the app picks the photos itself, and skips blurred ones.
  5. Finish the room. The app tells you when the room is ready: at least three walls, eight photos and most of the surfaces well photographed. Then move to the next room.
  6. Review and upload. Check the plan and the 3D view on the phone. Faces are blurred on the device, then you confirm the upload. You get an email with a private link when the result is ready.

Troubleshooting

Tracking lost, or the scan stops adding photos

The phone has lost its place in the room. Photos and depth pause until tracking is steady again, then resume by themselves.

Slow down, point the phone at a part of the room with texture (furniture, a door frame, a shelf) rather than a blank wall or a window, and turn on the lights. Hold still for a couple of seconds and the scan picks up again.

Low storage

A scan needs about 500 MB free to start, and pauses if free space drops below about 200 MB. Rooms you have already finished are saved.

Free up space in Settings, General, iPhone Storage, or upload and delete finished homes in the app, then carry on.

The phone gets hot

LiDAR, the camera and the 3D preview together work the phone hard. When iOS reports the phone is hot, the app takes fewer photos and depth frames to cool down.

Take the phone out of its case, keep it out of direct sun, and stop between rooms for a few minutes. If iOS shows a temperature warning, stop and let it cool: finished rooms are already saved.

The upload is slow or stalls

Scans are large. Upload on Wi-Fi where you can. An upload that is interrupted carries on from where it stopped when the connection comes back.

My result looks lumpy, or small items are missing

That is the limit of phone LiDAR, accurate to about 5 to 10 cm. Thin chair legs and small items are often lost, so objects come back right in size and position but not in fine detail.

When you need exact measurements, a laser survey gets within millimetres: see 3D laser scanning.

Need it exact? 3D laser scanning and as-built drawings from a laser survey.

Deleting your account and data

One scan: open the home in the app and delete it. The upload and its result page are deleted with it.

Your whole account: open the app’s account settings and choose Delete account. This deletes your account, every scan you uploaded and every result page. We remove them from our live systems straight away and from all storage within 30 days.

Cannot open the app? Email sales@volumet.net from the address you signed in with and ask us to delete your account. We confirm by email when it is done.

Scans are deleted automatically 12 months after upload. Detail in the privacy policy.
